A Very Special Pizza
John Carruthers and Crust Fund are on the verge of something pretty incredible.
It’s been almost five years since everyone’s favorite alley pizza maker first started offering up his tavern-style pies for charity, and in honor of that — as well as being on the precipice of pushing his donation total above $100,000 (let that sink in for a moment) — John is doing a very special one of one pizza, and of course I want to help get the word out.
From John:
Crust Fund Pizza started in a humble Chicago alley in August 2020. Not even five years later it is … still in the same alley. But it turns out you all are some tremendously generous people. We’ve raised $96,623.67 for some of the very best people doing the very best work in Chicago. Naturally the thinking turned to “what is the most excessive way to celebrate this occasion?”
BEHOLD, the pizza you see above. A very famous butcher (if you are into butchers) had to take time out of his day to answer my texts about an idea that came to me in the shower. Caviar! Precious vinegar priced like fine wine! It’s a whole lot of stuff happening in 25 squares.
The Hundo will be made ONE TIME, for the person who donates the exact amount to bring our fundraising to exactly six figures. That amount is currently $3,376.33. Hence the super-fancy ingredients. That donation will be made direct to The Friendship Center. The persistent demand for their services is a big part of what got Crust Fund going in the first place.
If you call this “an unnecessary stunt,” know that I absolutely am there with you. But we’re at a time where public servants are deciding that the biggest “service” of all is to cut off food and healthcare from struggling families. One can get angry, or one can make a really good Italian Beef pizza to try and help. Maybe it’s the Chicago in me, but I choose beef.
As per usual, keep an eye on John’s Instagram for more details about the special Hundo drop (as well as all his other ones), and you can also DM him there — or hit him up on the Crust Fund website — if you’re interested in placing the historic $3,376.33 bid that would push his donation total into six figures.
