My friend and neighbor Shawn Stevens, who is one of the owners of One Lake Brewing here in Oak Park, is letting me use his restaurant for a one of a kind event.
I’ll be taking over One Lake on Tuesday, April 8th from 6-9 pm, and I was able to recruit three of my favorite pizza makers in Chicago to come join me:
Mike Bielaczyc is the mad scientist of pizza who runs Mr. B’s Peppy Pies. Mike is a wild card who specializes in making EVERY KIND OF PIZZA YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE, and seeing as this is his first ever pop-up event, I’m sure he’s almost as excited as I am for everyone to get the chance to try his pizza.
Travis Hezel runs Chomp Pizza, and he’s a highly-trained pizza assassin who honed his skills at some of the best pizza restaurants in the city. On Sundays when the weather is nice, you can find Travis set up on the sidewalk in front of his apartment in Pilsen making pizzas for his neighborhood. Travis puts an incredible amount of thought in dedication into everything he does, and especially into his pizza.
And then we have the most altruistic man in all of pizza, John Carruthers of Crust Fund Pizza.
John’s pizzas are notoriously hard to get, I believe his monthly drops sell out in a matter of seconds now, so this might very well be your best chance to get a hold of some.
And while the pizza will absolutely be worth it on its own, all the proceeds will benefit Beyond Hunger.
For 45 years, Beyond Hunger has been harnessing the power of communities to end hunger. Serving residents of 13 zip codes on the West side of Chicago and nearby suburbs, Beyond Hunger’s comprehensive programming includes a food pantry, home delivery program, nutrition education services, benefits services, summer meals for kids, and more. What started with a girl scout troop creating holiday meal kits for 20 families, has matured into a vibrant community asset that provides healthy, nutritious groceries to over 65,0000 individuals a year. Beyond Hunger is not just meeting the needs of today—but building a future where everyone has reliable access to the foods they need to thrive.
An extremely limited quantity of tickets will be available starting early next week, with paid subscribers to the newsletter getting first access. So if you’ve been thinking about upgrading your subscription, the time is now. And SPOILER ALERT: if all goes according to plan, this will hopefully be the first event of many.
